The Banquet

… and Stalin will give you an apple

The Tsar’s tears were served at the banquet
In wooden pewter bowls.
‘I give you the gift of history,’ he said,
And the people, weeping, drank.

This poem refers to the anecdote of the teacher in the Soviet Union who asked the pupils to pray to God: no result. Then, asked to pray to Stalin, they would open their eyes to find set on each of their desks a fresh apple.

You can read a similar anecdote in the book War Through Children’s Eyes, a compilation of childrens’ eye witness accounts of Poland’s occupation during WWII.
