False Friends

For Boa Sr, who spoke Bo

This is the way a culture ends: a linguist sticks a mike under your nose
And you sing your soul like a good little girl. The departed linguist, profusely thanking,
Writes an essay in American English and files it at the European University, beside
A window framing the comissioned statue of a native speaker God.

n.b. This poem is not intended as a criticism of Professor Anvita Abbi, whose efforts to document Bo appear to have been tireless.
